Chapter Ten

Two weeks later

“This is going to be the best con ever! The con to beat all cons!”

Cici nodded her agreement to the crowd of beaming faces and then moved on to the next group setting up their tables in the main hall. It was gratifying to hear such heartfelt enthusiasm from her volunteers the evening before the festivities began in earnest. Little did they know the nagging questions that had dogged her every waking moment for the past month.

She gave a thumbs up to her registration staff as she passed them busily sorting through the name tags and lanyards. Something else other than the typical science fiction convention was happening here Cici had to acknowledge. Something existed underneath the surface, something more than an extended publicity stunt to garner attention for Another World Enterprises as she had first suspected. But what was it?

The baby food request incident had fueled her curiosity about the possible ulterior motives behind John Smith’s involvement with the unknown robotics company. Was he set to make a huge profit if the robots’ debut at Who Knows was a success? Or did something other than wealth motivate him, something personal? Either way, she had yet to buy the huge amount of pureed foodstuff to satisfy their guests’ requirements.

“John, you still haven’t answered my question,” she had whined earlier that day. “Why can’t we just have the hotel cater the green room with your typical snack spread? What explanation did this Mr. Barkness give for such an odd request?”

“It’s what they need. Or so he said.” John shrugged and changed the topic. “Look, I’ve got to go and meet our special guests now. They’ll need some help in… navigating… and setting up. Keep busy telling the others what to do and be sure to get that…food… they wanted. I won’t be long.”

He dashed down the corridor toward the back door, the opposite way they’d entered from her car. Was someone meeting him at the staff entrance from Another World? Cici shook her head and sighed. She knew she shouldn’t keep demanding an explanation. After all, she was actually receiving a salary and providing for their special guests was a part of her job description. And it wasn’t as if she’d been told to secure a large amount of street drugs or liquor for them. Still, it didn’t feel right.

Eventually she wandered over to the local Doctor Who club table and sat down beside the partially completed setup.

“Why the long face?” Jessie asked. “You look as if the fate of the world rests upon your shoulders.”

“Maybe it does. Sometimes, I almost think it has at one point or another in the past year or so.” Cici sighed. “I’m losing my mind. That’s all. Just ignore me.”

Jessie reached over and tenderly patted her back. “There, there. I don’t think you’re crazy, and I don’t want to ignore you if you need assistance. You’re carrying a large responsibility by singlehandedly running this con. What can I do to lighten your load?”

Cici bit her lip.
